Leaf blower repair in Hobart, Indiana.

Handheld and backpack. Hard start, weak throttle, smoking.

A carburetor taken apart on a blue parts tray in front of the ultrasonic cleaner

Leaf blowers get used hard for six weeks in the fall and then sit for the rest of the year. That schedule is exactly what a two-stroke engine hates. The mix goes stale, the carburetor gums up, and next October the blower is hard to start and weak when it does.

Handheld or backpack, we go through the fuel system first: lines, filter, primer, carburetor. Then the plug, the air filter and the exhaust screen, which packs with carbon and chokes the engine. A blower that pulls hard or will not retract the cord gets the recoil starter apart.

Backpack blowers with a long harness and a big tube are worth keeping alive. Bring it in before the leaves come down and it is ready for the first cold weekend. Price on the tag before the work starts, and we call you with it.

Every machine gets an M6 tag when it comes in. Book a drop-off, or read how the three steps work.

What we check on a leaf blower

  1. 01Fuel mix age, tank filter and fuel lines
  2. 02Primer bulb and carburetor diaphragms
  3. 03Spark plug and compression
  4. 04Air filter and the spark arrestor screen
  5. 05Recoil starter rope, spring and pawls
  6. 06Throttle cable, trigger and cruise control lever
  7. 07Tubes, clamps and the impeller housing for cracks
  8. 08Harness and mounts on backpack units

What usually is wrong

  • Hard to start every time: stale mix, weak primer or a tired carburetor
  • Runs but weak: carbon-plugged exhaust screen or a lean carb
  • Smokes heavily: too much oil in the mix or a stuck ring
  • Dies at full throttle: fuel starvation from a cracked line or a clogged filter
  • Pull cord stuck or will not retract: recoil spring or rope
  • Vibrates or rattles: cracked housing or a damaged impeller

Leaf blower questions

Do you work on backpack blowers?

Yes, handheld and backpack. Bring the whole unit with the tubes so we can run it the way you use it.

It runs but has no power. Is the engine worn out?

Usually not. A carbon-plugged exhaust screen or a lean carburetor gives the same symptom. We check those first and call you with what we find and the price.

When should I bring it in?

Late summer, before the leaves. The bench is quieter and it is ready for the first cold weekend. Book online or call or text (219) 781-3814.
