Chainsaw repair in Hobart, Indiana.

Bogging down, chain dull, won't idle, bar oiler dry.

Chainsaw cutting through a log

Chainsaws are two-stroke engines, and two-strokes are picky. Mixed fuel goes off faster than straight gas, the carburetor has tiny passages that clog with the slightest varnish, and a saw that idles fine but bogs when you pull the trigger is telling you the fuel system is on the edge.

We start every saw with a fuel check and a carb look, then compression, then the plug. A saw that will not start after a season in the shed almost always comes back with a clean carb, a fresh plug and fresh mix. If the pull cord is stiff, the recoil or the clutch side gets a look too.

Chain sharpening is done on the bar so the cutters and rakers match. A dull chain makes the saw work twice as hard and throws dust instead of chips. If the bar is worn or the chain has stretched past its adjuster, we tell you before replacing anything.

Every machine gets an M6 tag when it comes in. Book a drop-off, or read how the three steps work.

What we check on a chainsaw

  1. 01Fuel mix age and the fuel filter in the tank
  2. 02Carburetor, primer bulb and the fuel lines for cracks
  3. 03Compression and the spark plug
  4. 04Air filter and the cooling fins under the cover
  5. 05Chain sharpness, raker height and tension
  6. 06Bar rails, sprocket nose and the drive sprocket
  7. 07Bar oiler output and the oil tank vent
  8. 08Chain brake, throttle lock and the anti-vibration mounts

What usually is wrong

  • Will not start after storage: stale mix and a gummed carburetor
  • Idles but bogs under load: clogged high-speed jet or a cracked fuel line
  • Chain smokes or the bar burns: dry oiler or a plugged oil port
  • Cuts in a curve: uneven sharpening or worn bar rails
  • Chain keeps loosening: worn adjuster or a stretched chain
  • Hard pull or no compression: scored piston or a stuck ring

Chainsaw questions

Do you sharpen chainsaw chains?

Yes, on the bar or off. We sharpen the cutters, set the rakers and check the bar while it is apart. If the chain is stretched past saving we say so instead of grinding it down.

My saw starts but dies when I pull the trigger. What is that?

That is almost always the carburetor or a fuel line. Old mix clogs the high-speed side and the saw starves under load. We clean it, fresh mix, and test it on wood before it goes back on the tag.

What fuel mix should I be running?

Whatever the saw's manual says, mixed fresh. Do not run mix that has been sitting all summer. If you are not sure, bring the can when you drop off or call or text (219) 781-3814.

Bring the chainsaw in.

Drop it off. Pick it up running. Book online, or call or text and we will set a time.
