Lawn mower repair in Hobart, Indiana.

Won't start, runs rough, dull blade, pull cord gone.

Red push mower on a lawn

Most push mowers that come through the door have one of three things wrong: the gas sat too long, the blade has not seen a grinder in years, or the pull cord finally let go. None of that is the end of the mower. It is a morning on the bench.

Bring it in and we start with the fuel system, because that is where most no-start problems live. Old gas gums up the carburetor, the float sticks, the jet clogs, and the engine either will not fire or dies as soon as you let off the primer. We clean or rebuild the carb, change the plug and the filter, and run it under load before it goes back on the tag.

If the blade is dull we sharpen and balance it while it is here. A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, the lawn browns at the tips, and the engine works harder than it should. Sharp blade, fresh oil, clean carb, and a push mower from Hobart or anywhere in Lake County runs like it did the first spring you had it.

Every machine gets an M6 tag when it comes in. Book a drop-off, or read how the three steps work.

What usually is wrong

  • Will not start after sitting over the winter: stale fuel and a gummed carburetor
  • Starts, then dies: clogged main jet or a stuck float
  • Surging at idle: lean carburetor, air leak or a partly blocked jet
  • Cuts unevenly or leaves stragglers: dull or bent blade
  • Heavy vibration: blade out of balance or a bent crankshaft
  • Pull cord snapped or will not retract: broken rope or a tired recoil spring
  • Smoking on start: oil past the ring or the mower was tipped the wrong way

Lawn mower questions

My push mower will not start after the winter. Is it worth fixing?

Almost always. A no-start after storage is usually old fuel and a dirty carburetor, and that is routine work. We diagnose it first, put the price on the tag and call you before anything gets fixed.

Do you sharpen mower blades on their own?

Yes. Bring the blade or the whole mower. We sharpen and balance it, and if the edge is past saving we will tell you it needs a new blade instead of grinding it thin.

Should I drain the gas before I bring it in?

No need. Bring it as it is. If the gas is old, that tells us something. Call or text (219) 781-3814 if you are not sure how to move it.
