Generator repair in Hobart, Indiana.

Portable and standby-style units. Sat all year, now it won't fire.

A portable generator on the epoxy floor of the shop, tool chests behind it

A generator spends most of its life in a corner of the garage waiting for a storm. That is exactly why it will not start when you need it: the gas in the carburetor turned to varnish while it sat, and the one night the power goes out is the night it will not fire.

We service portable generators and the smaller standby-style units. A no-start gets the same treatment as any small engine: fuel, spark, compression, then the fix. Once it runs we put it under load, because a generator that idles fine and drops out when the fridge kicks on has a different problem than one that will not start at all.

If you want it ready before the next outage, book a tune-up and storage prep. We treat or drain the fuel, change the oil, check the plug and the outlets, and it goes back on the shelf ready to pull.

Every machine gets an M6 tag when it comes in. Book a drop-off, or read how the three steps work.

What we check on a generator

  1. 01Fuel age, shutoff valve, line and the carburetor bowl
  2. 02Spark plug, air filter and oil level
  3. 03Low-oil shutdown, so it does not refuse to start on a tilt
  4. 04Recoil or electric start and the battery if it has one
  5. 05Output under load at the outlets
  6. 06Breakers, outlets and the voltage selector
  7. 07Governor response when a load comes on
  8. 08Frame, wheels and fuel tank for leaks

What usually is wrong

  • Will not start after months in storage: varnished carburetor and stale fuel
  • Runs but no power at the outlets: tripped breaker, bad outlet or the unit lost its residual magnetism
  • Stalls when a load comes on: dirty carb, weak governor or a plugged fuel filter
  • Surges at idle: lean condition or an air leak
  • Shuts off after a minute: low-oil sensor or a fuel delivery problem
  • Hard to pull over: hydro lock or a flooded cylinder

Generator questions

My generator starts but nothing plugged in works. Can you fix that?

Usually, yes. We check the breakers and outlets first, then the output itself under load. We tell you what it is and what it costs before ordering anything.

How do I keep it ready for the next outage?

Fresh or treated fuel, a fresh plug and oil, and a short run under load every so often. We do all of that as a tune-up and storage prep so it is ready to pull.

Do you work on whole-house standby generators?

We take portable and the smaller standby-style units. For a large permanently wired unit, call or text (219) 781-3814 and describe it and we will tell you straight if it is one for us.

Bring the generator in.

Drop it off. Pick it up running. Book online, or call or text and we will set a time.
